MYSORE: Yet another tiger death in the Bandipur tiger sanctuary has raised concerns over wildlife conservation. This is the third death in the past eight months.
On Thursday, the sanctuary officials found carcass of a tiger at the Hongalli forest area. Field director, Project Tiger, B J Hosmath said though it is tough to know how the tiger died, initial investigations indicate it was a natural death. Ruling out the poison theory, Hosmath said in that case how can people fail to notice the tiger's carcass lying on the field borders for days? As some parts of a goat were found in the tiger's stomach, people suspect it to be a case of poisoning.
In February, a tiger was found dead near Himavad Gopalswamy Hills and in March, another was found dead in the Bandipur forest range.
Of the three, only one tiger was killed by poachers and the other two died naturally. Denying that the number of tiger deaths in Project Tiger is on the rise, he said like in any other animal population, 10 to 20% of tiger deaths are common.
